Well, regarding the mermaid princess’ ancestral power:
It could be possible that Otohime married INTO the Royal family, and thus the bloodline has been passed down from Neptune, and Shirahoshi is the first mermaid princess born from the bloodline since the one from Joyboy’s time.
Also, my personal theory:
Vivi and Shirahoshi may not necessarily join the Straw Hats, but they will be allies in the last great war that Whitebeard alluded to.
Think about it: Vivi will eventually be in control of Alabasta Kingdom, which is sitting on Pluton and Shirahoshi IS Poseidon. Two princesses, both loyal to the Straw Hats and will access to world destroying powers.
Plus, it would be SO Oda to force Vivi and Robin work together, to revive Pluton.
