I just realized that the Pink colorspread probably has something to do with this month being Breast Cancer Awareness Month. I’m just assuming here though.
nice episode you guys. I am over joyed about the Shonen Jump alpha news and waiting two weeks for the new chapters is totally worth it to get good translations ^_^. I’m glad to hear you guys had fun at NYCC. I can’t wait for next weeks episode I hope you’ll announce the winners for the back to the future contest at last X3.
I completely respect your ideas on the manga recap. You’re doing the right thing, and I guess it’ll give me an idea of how the official translation continues as well. And that’s as someone who is living in the UK… However, I think I’ll just end up skipping the manga recaps. I enjoy your show too much to leave it completely… Though I admit it is tempting to just leave. Fortunately your podcast is laid out in such a way that it is easy to avoid that section.
I will be doing this for possibly different reasons to what you might expect. I’ve always wanted to support official releases of Oda’s work in my country. I am a huge One Piece fan, and there is nothing I would love more then to support something that I enjoy so much. As of such, when the simulcast was announced (in the US only) I stopped watching the anime streamed. This then led to a point where I stopped listening to your anime recaps, there wasn’t much point without the anime to watch alongside it. The same thing I feel will happen to the manga recap. I can’t bring myself to read fan-translation/scanalations when there is an official version being released that isn’t god knows how far behind. I collect the VIS Manga from comicbook stores as it comes out (at a slower rate then in the US, but I’m not complaining I’m happy to get it at all) but always wanted to be up to date so I could keep up with your podcast. Now, I wouldn’t feel morally right to do so with this new online release.
It’s difficult to know how to feel about the news of this itself… To put it into context, here’s how I first heard about this. Friends in the US sent me multiple messages about One Piece, excited I checked it out… Only to find taunts letting me know how much my country sucked and that the US ruled because they had more One Piece. This is how a lot of my friends in the UK similarly found out about this new service.Through taunting. It makes it hard not to be angry about the situation.
How I would love to be able to help the authors by being able to buy these digital copies of Jump and the manga chapters… Sadly, living in the UK, I can’t. It’s hard not to feel bitter and feel that no one in the industry gives a damn about anybody outside of the US, or ever will. It’s hard not to overreact and consider this announcement another of many kicks to the face for fans of the series that don’t live in the US.
But I know this isn’t the case. It’s just a gut reaction, a disappointment at the various problems distributors have to face, and I would be selfish to consider this anything other then a huge achievement for those that it will be available to. It’s pretty much a given that services such as this and the simulcast will never be available to those of us living outside of the states. It’s a shame, as otherwise I’d be extremely excited at the opportunity to more directly and immediately support the media I love. For the meantime, I shall have to be content with being excited for you guys and my other friends in the US. In the end it’s not about who gets it first, it’s about all of us wanting to support a great piece of entertainment we have all committed to over the years.
Sometimes I find it hard to make time to listen to these podcast episodes. :/
Alpha recap…
Releasing manga volumes digitally? Personally, I prefer the old-fashioned books, but at least this is a GREAT way to get certain manga out there and be readily available to loads of people at once!
Manga recap…
lol at the Futurama reference!
The colorspread looked very weird to me. I can’t explain why or how, but it just looks different from your typical colorspreads.
It’s nice to see Den again, even though I almost completely forgot about him, like Steve. It sucks, because I thought he’d be pretty cool.
Camie, too, I didn’t really notice her doing much. I just sort of forgot she existed during the Straw Hats’ arrival at Ryuugu Palace and their confrontation with Jimbei. I always had Hachi in mind, though, I can’t possibly forget about him.
King Neptune is up there with Cobra as one of the few GOOD members of royalty in One Piece. I hope he lives. He probably will, it’s One Piece after all… *groan*
Oh, I completely did not notice Surume! Poor kraken, I hope he gets better soon.
Seeing Brook and Zeo fight, and Jimbei punch like that were the highlights of the chapter, even though they were only one panel each.
It’s kind of stupid that the people won’t leave, even though they can’t do anything. I like how the Minister of the Right and the royal army join the Straw Hat Pirates and Jimbei and fighting for the good cause. I also like his “make your own decision” speech. That seems to be the theme of this arc, decide for yourself, follow what you think is right… Which ends up being the cause for why Hody Jones and the New Fishman Pirates are doing all these horrible things.
I knew we’d see Hammond again. And I knew either Robin or Nami would deal with him. I’m glad it was Robin, though. And I’m glad that Jimbei told her to free the human slaves. Although he does go deeper into thinking about how they’ll react to Fishmen in general after this, which is good, because most characters don’t usually think about the deeper consequences of certain actions…
lol, “B’rer Fox”! XD
Bigger lol, “CSI: Miami” Robin! I actually didn’t notice she was wearing shades at first.
I’m glad I’m not the only one who though Sanji standing on Wadatsumi’s face was disturbing! Seriously, the detail of his face that close is just FREAKY!
You know, it’s a good thing Wadatsumi is so stupid, he can be easily fooled by Sanji in such a fashion.
Jimbei is just so awesome. I wish I can say the same for General Franky.
Still, Franky fighting Ikaros Much is so perfect in my eyes, I don’t care! I like the Franky Fire/Franky Fireball upgrade!
This is another favorite part from the chapter, because it involves CHOPPER! X3
Heavy Point for the first time after the Time-Skip, and it’s strong enough to negate Dosun’s hammer attack (though not without getting a little hurt). I actually didn’t notice the difference in his face at first, but now that you mention it, yeah, it’s actually less human-like than before… Not that it matters to Chopper at this point. Speaking of which, I also like the exchange between him and Zoro. They always had a “special” relationship, those two.
The thing about Chopper becoming a monster because that’s originally why Luffy wanted him, I never thought of that, but damn, does it all make sense now.
Also, as funny as Hyozo’s reaction was, and as badass as Zoro is, I have to say, I’m a little disappointed that Zoro’s able to to break his swords with ease. Out of all the New Fishman Pirate Officers, I though HE’D be the one to pose the most challenge, but even AFTER the insane power boost, compared to Zoro, he just doesn’t compare!
Anime recap…
WHOA! New FUNimation moniker. Caught me off guard… Okay, WE GO!
…Damn, I love Robin’s outfit. :I
I think it’s cute how she’s talking to the Thousand Sunny, although if the Going Merry proved anything, it’s that ships can be sentient beings and even talk to their respective crews if given enough love and care.
And Franky’s EPIC entrance! In terms of personality, Robin’s right, he hasn’t changed at all. Thank God.
…God DAMN, those arms are RIDICULOUS! Looking at them in the anime, I mean. I knew they were ridiculous before, but the coloring only seems to ramp up how ridiculous they are!
It’s also weird how he still somehow sees the word “pervert” as a compliment…
BTW, Sunny covered in coating looks… interesting. To say the least.
I still remember when Franky joined the crew, he called everyone by his own personal nicknames, like Usopp would be long-nose, Sanji would be blondie or “eyebrow-cook”, but now he’s calling them all by name. Amazing…
You know what else is amazing? That cola bottle. Where did Franky get THAT?!
I also like this look back at Brook, how he was all alone, a skeleton, likely to be shunned by the outside world, but now he’s a famous celebrity with tons of adoring fans!
You know, Brook’s song sounds cool in Japanese, but looking at the lyrics, it sounds like something Weird Al Yankovic would come up with.
God damn… I really hated this scene in the manga, and in the anime, hearing Chopper’s adorable voice, it breaks my heart… I mean, seriously Chopper, don’t be this naive! These guys CLEARLY aren’t your friends!
Oh yeah… I was a little confused about this. Chopper still doesn’t realize Usopp is Sogeking? Even after seeing Usopp use Sogeking’s weapon in Thriller Bark? Eh, maybe he just forgot about it…
Also, Fluffy is really, REALLY stupid if he didn’t realize the real Chopper when it was standing right in front of him. Then again, he ALSO thought impersonating one of the most-wanted pirates in the world and flaunting it in front of everyone he meets would also be a good idea.
You know… Looking at just her facial features… Fake Robin, aka Cocoa DOES look a lot like the real Nico Robin… That’s about as close as any of the fake Straw Hats will ever get.
They certainly like emphasizing how stupid Fluffy is. I also like how Fake Zoro and Fake Sanji don’t bother to tell Fluffy that he’s the real Chopper until AFTER Chopper ran off. Further proof that these idiots had no idea what they were getting into with this impersonation business.
It’s even MORE heartbreaking to see Chopper truly believing all this and having his emotions running high for a bunch of obvious fakes that he’s somehow too thick to realize. Thankfully, though, it’s because of this that he doesn’t realize Usopp is Sogeking, and thus able to recognize him when they meet.
And look at that, it’s good ol’ Sentomaru! And he STILL has a weird voice for someone like him.
It’s also interesting that Sentomaru, who’s Dr. Vegapunk’s personal bodyguard, has no idea what he and the real Kuma did…
I STILL wish they had more variations on the eye-catchers.
What’s this? Filler? LAME! Luffy shouldn’t be wasting time running into guys like these… Well, anyway, he finally decides to put “you-know-what” on! XD
MORE filler?! Nami asking for outrageous discounts isn’t funny. >:I
Sanji and Zoro still can’t get along. I mostly think this is due to Zoro being unreasonably thick, though. Sanji should learn to keep a better eye on him. Or at least the eye that isn’t covered by his hair.
Sanji, I know you spent 2 years on an island filled with FUCKING UGLY homos, but at least TRY to show some restraint! I think it’s here where Zoro’s personality comes in handy. Even if he’s stupid, he’s still blunt about Sanji’s more idiotic tendencies.
Oh and here’s the scene that torn me apart the most. Chopper going through such pain, contemplating what his training was for, trying to figure out why Luffy would say and do such harsh and cruel things… GOD DAMMIT CHOPPER, OPEN YOUR EYES! And yet, when he finally realizes they’re fakes, there’s really not much too it except Chopper’s typical “shocked reaction of an obvious truth”. Eh… Oda’s humor. Go figure.
Although I did think it was funny, Nami going to hug him, and he’s all like “Wha? Nami?”
“She didn’t even smell familiar!” Then why did you think it was her, God dammit! Sorry, this just really frustrates me… This, along with a certain someone else who falls for this in the future.
I actually think it’s rather cute, and funny, how Chopper and Usopp both realize they’re not famous enough to warrant impersonators. And it really is flattering… until you realize that the “impersonators” hardly put any effort into “impersonating” the Straw Hat Pirates.
Another funny thing is Fake Zoro is so out-of-shape that he gets so exhausted from running, as opposed to the real Zoro, who works out all the time.
That mustache WOULD help avoid trouble… if Luffy wasn’t such a freaking idiot. Still, we don’t see his TRUE idiocy in this episode, so I’ll save that for another time.
I kind of like the ironic parallel between Fake Zoro and Sanji and real Zoro and Sanji. The Fake Zoro and Sanji are often seen together and get along pretty well. The REAL Zoro and Sanji, on the other hand…
I think it’s a little arrogant of Zoro to rank himself first, ESPECIALLY since he didn’t get here on his own. We’ll see who guided him later on, but Sanji’s right within his mind to be angry with this blockhead.
The new rookies are really ugly… Though I rather like “Gashed” Albion’s design. “Lip Service” Doughty also looks freaking hilarious!
And finally we see Caribou and Coribou in color… The green lizard really helps clarify that it really is a lizard on Coribou’s head and not his hair. Also, Caribou has dark skin. I guess it makes sense. Also, his eyes are darker then I thought…
And they’re green. Instead of deranged spirals like in the manga… OH WAIT, now I see it. I just had to get a closer look at his eyes to see their deranged-ness.
…And that Marine is screwed.
As for your comments…
The “new” We Go? …OH CRAP, I completely forgot, yeah! The Straw Hat Pirates fighting on the Thousand Sunny! Yeah, that was awesome!
You guys are right, this episode is more of a comedy now then how it’s been in a LONG time.
…I’m glad I finally got around to listening to this episode…
