On this episode of The One Piece Podcast we train to head into the New World with Zach, Ed, Steve, Jason, and Greg. We have a ton to do before we make the trip, though. First we have to go through some News from both Japan and the U.S. Then we trudge through the Manga Recap for Chapter 640 which includes the likes of giant ships, vicious fishmen, holes, and claims of sexism.
Then we find ourselves at the Anime Recap for Episode 516 which includes an all new rendition of “We Are” by Mr. Kitadani and a look at the preview for the next episode. After that Greg takes us into all new territory with an exclusive interview with One Piece creator and author Eiichiro Oda. As if that weren’t enough trials and tribulations for you, Greg also brings us the second installment of his “inspirations” segment. We conclude training with our traditional “piece together,” and then go to New World! It’s a heck of a journey.

The power of love? It’s in your heart? Like Sniper Island? Heart is so totally NOT a useless power!
News…
I like International Talk Like a Pirate Day! To me, I’m just reminded of how awesome pirates are!
Manga recap…
Yeah, people have been saying how hot Vivi looks now, but really, Vivi’s always been stacked for someone who’s supposedly 16. Oh well, at least she’s now at the “legal” age. Carue’s awesome, too. Eyelashes has a helmet. Not much else to comment on.
Also, Luffy isn’t the youngest member of the crew. Chopper is. Or at least he was when he finally joined. Also, Luffy and Usopp are the same age.
I didn’t even notice the barrel. Thanks for pointing that out and ruining the cover page for me, Steve!
Poor Surume… Wow, Zach, you’re really off your a-game today.
I totally did not notice the speck that is Sanji yelling in the top panel, because he’s in the air…
The diamond shape on Nami’s tattoo? Umm…
I didn’t notice Nami punching Brook the first time. I thought Brook was all “GAH” from the squid attack…
lol, dry bones…
A lot of people have pointed this out, and yeah, it’s kind of weird how not only are the girls not fighting major enemies, they also have to be saved… What’s up with that?
Maybe it’s just the sexist mindset of the bad guys rather than Oda himself…
I thought it was “Shogun Franky”, not “General Franky”… BTW, I totally called this match-up.
You know, someone actually said Zeo was a boring character. They CLEARLY did NOT pay attention to him in this chapter, because he is the absolute best! “headbutting the foot”. Classic!
BTW, I ALSO called this match-up, too! Brook vs. Zeo.
Chopper is the best, he’s totally not a coward anymore when it comes to fighting. He’s also now able to easily hold his own in a fight! I also like the call-back to the Usopp/Chopper Alabasta fight!
I totally did NOT expect Daruma to fight Usopp. Way to play against my expectations, Oda!
I think it’s HILARIOUS how all the New Fishman Pirates don’t do anything and jsut stand back and watch the officer fights. Kind of like like the first Buggy fight, or the Kuro fight, or the Don Krieg fight. Or Hell, most of the early fights in One Piece. ANOTHER call-back!
Wait a minute… One of those mermaids looks like Ishey… AKA, one of the mermaids THAT CARIBOU KIDNAPPED!!! Did he abandon them in favorite going after the Mermaid Princess? Or am I just seeing things…
Okay, so Vander Decken didn’t die. I SHOULD have known better but silly me, I thought that since we’re goign into the New World, Oda would up his game a bit. Eh, doesn’t matter. Vander Decken knocking himself out, even though he has all those wounds just says to me that he’ll die from blood loss, if he doesn’t die when Noah eventually collapses.
Also, Hody seems to be going out of his way just to show off how evil he is now. Nothing’s making any sense (he wanted to rule Fishman Island, didn’t he? Now he wants to destroy it?!), and I’ve calle dhim the Marik Ishtar of One Piece. And by that I mean the Yu-Gi-Oh Abridged and/or 4Kids Marik. He has stereotypically evil motivations, but nothing he does follows any sort of logic aside from showcasing how evil he’s supposed to be. Hody’s like that.
Mamboshi’s an idiot for blabbing that Shirahoshi is changing course. :/
Even when holding onto life, Vander Decken’s still a comedic character. Also, it seems he’s forgotten his love for Shirahoshi and wants revenge against Hody Jones.
“The winner is me!” Anyone else thinking what I was thinking when they read that line?
Wait, there’s no new chapter next week? …Oh well. Too obsessed with ponies to care…
Anime recap…
I like the choice of music for the intro to the anime recap.
The opening “Fight Together” was awesome, I freaking love it! I’ll miss it, though…
And so we say good-bye to Jimbei… For now… He’s been a great help to Luffy for the past several arcs, and he certainly won’t be forgotten anytime soon… Not to mention, we’ll be seeing him again… 2 years down the road…
That whale shark is AWESOME, BTW.
I like that little exchange between Luffy and Jimbei. Jimbei’s very honorable, and sees his survival as shameful, as he was fully prepared to die for Luffy (and Ace and Whitebeard to that extent). Luffy tells him that’s no big deal, and he’s got nothing to be ashamed of. And really, he doesn’t. That’s why I love this guy. He’s so just, it’s strange to think he’s a pirate… or was a pirate, anyway.
EGAD! Jimbei smiled! That’s a rare sight! BTW, this whole conversation thing strengthens my resolve to see Jimbei join the crew! Eventually…
Oh brother, Hancock on another delusional Luffy fantasy… Eh, we’ve got to fill in this episode somehow.
Jason doesn’t like “overreacted stuff in anime”? That’s part of the humor, at least by Japanese standards. The other half is explaining the joke by having a character outright exclaim what’s going on. Eh, different culture, what’cha gonna do.
lol, 516 episodes is part one… Holy crap, when One Piece ends, I’ll probably be, like, in my late 30s! Such a creepy thought.
An island with 48 seasons that changes weekly? The One Piece world is weird sometimes…
I can’t believe that Hancock is actually able to get angry and grab Rayleigh’s nose, like it doesn’t bother her how freaking powerful he is. Then again, she also owes a great deal to him, as well as Elder Nyon, so that’s why she’s more of a playful angry than outfight enraged.
I like how Luffy casually waves good-bye to all the Kuja Pirate warriors. It’s going to be 2 years before he sees any of them again…
That tree… someone in an SBS question pointed out that that it looks similar to the tree in Strong World. I forgot what kind of answer Oda gave to that.
Oh wow, ancient civilization? Perhaps Robin would be interested if she ever reached this island…
And here comes that elephant… You know, ever since you guys mentioned it, yeah, I’m like “what the FUDGE is up with his tiny feet?! That CAN’T be enough to support his weight!” Regardless, this is the perfect time to teach Luffy (and the audience) about Haki…
Oh WOW! Luffy actually tried to fight back against the elephant! That wasn’t in the manga… Either way, it’s a nice indicator that proves Rayleigh’s point that Luffy isn’t strong enough to face the 500+ animals on this island…
Observation Haki, aka Mantraki. I like the flashbacks to Sandersonia and Eneru. I also just realized, Rayleigh SPECIFICALLY mentioned Skypiea. Remember? He and Gol D. Roger’s crew visited that island long ago! Sweet…
Get J. Michael Tatum to say “Banana me!” instead of “Mantra” during this part.
I’m also glad that there’s, so far, no scientific explanation to Haki, because then it would be REALLY like the Force, and all it’s cop-out-y-ness…
Armament Haki, aka, Armaki. Probably the most useful form of Haki Luffy will learn. More flashbacks to Sentomaru and Marigold.
It’s also interesting, that when Luffy talks about Aokiji, they use the opening 5 animation.
I love how amazed Luffy is with Rayleigh’s powers… And soon enough, those powers will be his own!
The eyecatchers… Yeah, I suppose I’ll miss them. But whatever new eyecatchers they come up with, I’m sure I’ll like them, too.
Conqueror’s Haki, aka Willabition Haki (or whatever). I like how Luffy finally realizes that he has that power in him. Now he just has to learn to control it…
I like what you guys said about how what happens in the anime “sticks in your head”, because some things don’t make as much sense in the manga as they do when they’re full animated.
You know what? It really IS cool to have someone, who is literally the right hand of the former Pirate King, training YOU to become the next Pirate King. It’s amazing! Incredible! And you don’t realize it at first…
It’s also nice to see him realize that Shanks also used that power when he was just a boy…
lol, Luffy swallowing that meat that’s bigger then him, then popping back to his old frame. XD
I TOTALLY did not notice the night-to-day transition…
Luffy’s taking a break… a 1-week break as far as the anime is concerned, but whatever. A quick flashback to his promise will his brothers, a look back on all the Straw Hat Pirates (All saying Luffy, except Brook, who says Luffy san! XP ), and then…
“Professor Rayleigh”? Is that the best they can come up with? Eh, whatever, REMIX TIME!
Pretty sweet, IMO. And the ending “Go To New World” instead of the usual “To Be Continued” was a nice touch.
Oda Interview…
So people are ashamed to admit they like One Piece in Japan? Weird… Kind of like people are ashamed to admit they like My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic in America… Or Europe or anywhere to that matter.
I’m glad Oda choose NOT to answer some questions… For all our sake.
Greg no Gougai…
The name “Blueno” sounds similar to “Bluto”, but I don’t think they’re very similar to each other… Other than the whole Franky/Popeye thing.
Lafitte is David Bowe? I don’t know…
I have no idea who the wrestling guy is, but apparently, he and Spandam had similar masks, so…
Ohm and Holy are Dick Dastardly and Muttley?! No way, Ohm is WAY too competent and DOESN’T give up the chance to win just to cheat/be evil. Shura, though? Well, Dick Dastardly was an aviator at one point…
Piece Together…
It’s weird… the Supernovas were introduced RIGHT before the Whitebeard War and the time skip… I’ve always wonder, just what does Oda have planned for these characters, and what significance will they have later on…
I’m sure the Whitebeard Pirates/New World Pirates had graves, but we only saw Ace and Whitebeard’s.
The prediction is interesting, because Oda wouldn’t have made that kind of a prediction if it didn’t have some meaning. We know what kind of person is, so the only question reminds is that how and why, exactly, would Luffy destroy Fishman Island… Or in what shape or form? Not to mention, there’s fire all around him, so… Yeah?
I think Hody Jones is just an evil prick. :/
Oh God, here comes my question! XD
Zach doesn’t understand the series at all? Well, I guess it’s time to “enlighten” him!
Bronies UNITE!
Jimbei’s MY favorite Fishman pirate. Him, and Zeo and Arlong. Fisher Tiger gets honorable mention.
I like how the Straw Hats have changed, but not by too much. Character development is great, but at the same time, we don’t want to see the characters we’ve fallen in love with change TOO much from what we liked about them.
So umm… I guess Nami and/or Robin could fight Hammond. Or that Lionfish guy…
Another great episode, and thanks for answering my stupid question!
during the fight between ussop/chopper and dossun/daruma the attacks are Horn Cannon Elf and Green star Skull exploding grass. the later of wich was an attack that exploded underground in the tunnels and shot out the holes to attack the new fishmen pirates. why ussop asked chopper if he came out without making a hole was so he wouldnt be hit by the attack
How do you access the AAC feed I clearly am missing something obvious but
I can’t figure it out for the life of me
It’s the first download link, under the first media player, or you can subscribe on iTunes.
Nami was attacked by two strong fishmen. So it is normal to help her. Dont bash Oda for this
First love the title. I agree with you guys on the whole Nami and Robin not getting to show much of their strength it would be awesome if they are able to stop Noah though. The Anime recap was amazing the new we are was a perfect way to end it before the time skip as was the Go To The New World SO COOL XD! The Oda interview and the Greg no Gougai were super fun I especially loved the interview very fun to listen to.
I can’t wait to listen to the live episode next week and I swear I will finish my entry for the back to the future before Saturday. Until then guys to the New World XD! lol
When you say “Mr Wantanabe” do you mean Shu Wantanabe because I know he’s a huge One Piece fan, thanks
