On this episode of The One Piece Podcast we do not replace guns with walkie-talkies, we do not replace Jason with a CGI Firefly/Dr. Who/Tron Machine*, Greg does not say “NOOO!” at any point, and we have not edited the episode to make Jammer blink.
Instead we bring you an episode packed with the usual One Piece Podcast awesome: we have some News including a full look at the Tokyo Game Show events surrounding One Piece: Kaizoku Musou. We have a Manga Recap of Chapter 639 and an Anime Recap of Episode 515, the penultimate episode before the timeskip. Included in this episode is a Greg no Gougai segment with the first part of our “Inspirations” segment. We round things off with Piece Together, and some little bits at the end. With that, enjoy this show.

FYI guys the “Take our audience survey” link doesn’t seem to be leading to a survey…
It should be working now.
First of Thank you to Jason for being the once who let the podcast know about that awesome one piece live show for their game. The News info was great especially the supernova part so AWESOME! The manga recap was cool I didn’t see it as inconsistent as you guys. Also the anime recap could have used some more talk on the anime lol just saying also I don’t know which one of you asked who has actually cried tears running down your face, that would be me, boogers and everything ain’t ashamed to say it. Greg no gougai was tons of fun XD I can’t wait to see more of it.
I actually haven’t been in a very One Piece-y mood lately. I’ve been too obsessed with My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic.
News…
The “We Go” opening, made by the same exact people who made “We Are”, is absolutely perfect! I can’t wait to see it!
That Instrumental “We Go”… I’m not sure what to think of it at the moment… I’m going to have to wait and see the actual opening. Still, I think it’s pretty cool on it’s own.
Wait… Armraki is BLUE?! ….Weird… I HOPE Oda told the guys at Toei what color it’s supposed to be. After all, Brook was colored orange and gray in his initial video game appearance.
Seeing ALL the Supernovas like that was really strange… I thought one or two would have been killed off, but apparently they’re all okay… That is, if this bit of artwork is to be taken as canon… Personally, I’d like to see what has happened to Kid, Law, and Drake. Their appearances don’t really matter to me AS much.
Manga recap…
I can’t believe some people bothered to point out the jackal on Chaka’s boxers. Yeah, it’s his nickname, AND he changes into a jackal. Big fucking whoop.
I don’t know WHAT that scar is, but I don’t care. Pell should be fucking DEAD! Not because I don’t like him, but because he somehow managed to survive being at the center of a HUGE explosion! Geez…
Kung Fu Dugongs, cool! And Terracotta and Igaram, cool, cool. Wait, Igaram had a mustache? I didn’t even notice that!
Glancing over the reverie, I see. Eh, oh well.
Wait, where did Vander Decken keep such a huge axe?
It’s so weird to see Hody Jones just calmly talking to the guy he just stabbed… Also, it seems that Hody Jones has no sense of logic or thinking at all, aside from being evil. I thought he wanted to rule Fishman Island, but now he wants to destroy it? I’ll say it before and I’ll say it again, Hody Jones is the Marik Ishtar of One Piece.
This is confusing… I hope it makes more sense in the anime… Either way, I’m almost CONVINCED that Vander Decken isn’t going to die… I don’t know why, something about this scene, where it makes it SEEM like he’s going to die… it means Oda’s going to “surprise” us and show him alive later.
I guess Hody really is just crazy. His plans make no sense at all… WAIT! I GET IT NOW! It’s the drugs! They’re turning him more and more evil! …I canNOT believe I just said that.
I didn’t really notice the effects of Luffy’s attack. I just thought he grabbed Hody really hard… But is he going to start bleeding? Are his ribs broken?
Wow… now LUFFY’S got crazy eyes!
Everyone kind of assumed that Surume was beating up Wadatsumi… But if you look at the panel in which they’re in, Surume’s attacks don’t actually hit Wadatsumi. And everyone’s shouting “DO SOMETHING!”, like he’s not really doing anything.
It’s interesting, though… Wadatsumi is really just a big baby… And it seems mean to beat up a baby, no matter what side he’s on or how big he is.
Zeo’s my favorite bad guy from this arc. So sophisticated, yet unwilling to admit any faults or flaws in him.
Poor Surume… I hope Chopper helps him after the fighting is all done… My sadness for Surume however is immediately overcome by extreme awesomeness from Jimbei. Seriously, he is SO FREAKING BADASS now! More, MORE, MORE JIMBEI!!! I mean, not only does he BLOCK Wadatsumi’s attack with one kick, he also HURTS his hand and knocks him over! My GOD is he powerful!
And Sanji joins in, and apparently they’re both going to take on Wadatsumi together… Well, Jimbei IS a martial artist, and Sanji has a tendency to fight the martial artist of the enemy group, so it’s a nice fit. Still, I can’t help but feel a little bad for Wadatsumi, he REALLY is like a big baby…
Not to mention, the whole “vs.” thing is another reason why I think Jimbei will join the crew. Yeah.
It really SUCKS that Hyozo is super-powered by the drugs like Hody Jones, he was the only one I thought was powerful on his own and DIDN’T abuse the drugs. But not only DID he take drugs, he took them while drinks… Dude, isn’t that sort of thing supposed to kill you?
I KNEW that Hyozo would fight Zoro. The whole thing with Robin, I don’t get… Then again, how WOULD a fight between Robin and Hyozo pan out? Doesn’t matter, Zoro was destined to fight Hyozo…
Anime recap…
Given that this has 4 stories of the Straw Hats in one, this would probably mean they’ll have to condense them greatly which means no room for filler… And I’m good with that! Still, the title is COMPLETELY about Zoro, even though his story is only, like, 1/4 of the episode. Zoro’s such a glory hog.
It’s amazing how the long-arm tribesmen look like normal people, just with double joints in their arms.
This one it looks like they just reused Brook’s flashback… Either that or they did a REALLY good job at copying it! ANYWAY, Brook’s unique because he’s a living skeleton, so he can’t possibly live a normal life should he somehow escape the Florian Triangle. Lucky for him, Luffy found him and invited him on his crew without a second thought. Brook owes Luffy a lot for that simple gesture… And yet, it wasn’t apparent what he was going to do to make himself stronger for Luffy… I truly was stumped at how Brook was going to turn out after the 2-year-timeskip.
It’s interesting, though, the guys who kidnapped him say it’s enough for him to just move, and that he’s a freak. I bet they never would have guessed that he would make them rich beyond their wildest dreams! …That tune he’s playing isn’t “Born to be Wild”, though. I wonder if FUNimation can somehow get the rights to that song…
Robin’s is the shortest story, so hopefully, this will be quick.
It really IS interesting that Robin found people who have been actively looking for her and know what she’s REALLY been through. Surely they’d be willing to fight for her and protect her… And yet she has no regrets… Meeting Luffy was the best thing that ever happened to her.
Oh God… Hearing kid Robin going “Dereshishishishi” breaks my heart… Because I know what it means… Poor girl.
Robin’s flashback also doesn’t look very re-animated… I guess that’s because it was so soon compared to the other members…
It’s also very funny to see that the Revolutionaries spare no expense to make sure Robin’s comfortable. It really does seem like she’d be perfect living with them… Then again, fate is strange like that… I look forward toward seeing what she learn’s from Luffy’s father, Dragon…
Usopp’s fat guy voice is kind of annoying… Heracles, though, is always awesome.
Now THIS is awesome, reanimated clips from Usopp’s past… Usopp knows now that if he wants to be by Luffy’s side, he has to be the strongest he can possibly be! He can’t just stay by the sidelines anymore! He needs to fight, fight, FIGHT! And Heracles is just the man to teach him how! Those Pop Greens, though… Does Usopp have to repeatedly grow more of them? I mean, surely they can’t be infinite…
And finally, we come to the glory hog, Zoro, the guy who’s name and story takes up the entire title of the episode. I have to admit, Mihawk is pretty damn awesome in this scene… Even though when I first saw him in the episode, he looked freaking ugly.
It’s really strange, though… Zoro, asking the man he vowed to defeat for help… And what’s weirder… Mihawk accepting him! Imagine that, Mihawk was hoping for someone who could be his new rival, and now he’s basically making one!
Is beating the baboons REALLY that big a deal that Mihawk stops mid-drink to react to that?
It’s also interesting that Zoro doesn’t give Mihawk the REAL reason to train him… Mihawk still somehow knows there’s a deeper meaning behind all this, and decides to accept anyway… Seeing him actually SMILE for ANY extended period of time is also very weird.
Zoro’s face lighting up when Mihawk agrees to train him… There’s some child-like joy that I see in his face… So very… odd…
MORE floating black flakes! Just to make this scene look more intense than it is!
Okay, why are Mihawk and Zoro outside the house? Oh, it doesn’t matter, the Unofficial One Piece Podcast intro music is playing, so you know something big is about to happen!
Zoro’s flashback! I almost completely forgot about his… It’s so interesting to remember that Zoro was the first guy to join Luffy’s crew… He’s sort of got a special relationship with Luffy because of that.
It’s amazing how great this animation looks, and yet how similar it is to the original episodes back then! I always tend to overlook or forget Zoro’s only moment crying, just after Mihawk defeats him at the Baratie. He vows never to be defeated again… I think this goes deeper then I initially gave it credit for.
HOLY CRAP! That HUGE baboon wasn’t in the manga! Not to mention, I thought Mihawk said his training wasn’t to begin until AFTER his wounds have healed! …The FUCK? His has his OWN big sword and has COPIED Mihawk?! Oh God… Oh Man… Oh God Oh Man Oh God Oh Man OH GOD!!!!
Either way, I like how this ends, with everyone vowing to meet up at Shabody in 2 years!
Greg no Gougai…
I can’t believe Zach didn’t notice Franky’s huge arms are just like Popeye’s.
Oda said Eneru was based on Eminem… I think it was an interview.
Well… The Lord of the Coast is based off Floatsom and Jetsom from The Little Mermaid? I forget how their names are spelled but the fact that I remember their names at all is… pretty sad.
Piece Together…
Armraki would be awesome to have in fights. I think I’d go with Mantraki, though. short predictions would be very useful!
You want someone with a good Don Adams impression? Seek out Maurice LaMarche! He is a God among voice actors!
Drive? Is it THE GREATEST MOVIE YOU EVER SEEN IN YOUR LIFE?!
Pretty long bloopers this time…
In answer to them asking if people have actually cried watching onepiece, I cried during nami’s flashback, during the luffy vs usopp fight, and when the merry go died. Those are the only time a movie, tv show, or anything else thats not “real life” has made me cry.
